Early healing

During the early stages of healing, it is important to check your scar regularly for possible signs of infection.

Contact your medical team if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • A rash around your scar
  • Increasing pain
  • Discharge from the scar
  • Increasing heat around the scar
  • A fever or nausea

Moisturising your scar

A scar can affect the skin's natural barrier function, so keeping the area moisturised is an important part of scar care.

Once all scabs have gone, you can begin applying a suitable cream, oil or gel to your scar two or three times a day. This helps to support the skin and may reduce excessive scar tissue deposition.

Gentle and regular scar massage

Once the skin is ready, gentle massage movements may help to soften and stretch the scar and the underlying tissues.

Scar massage can be performed for approximately three to five minutes, ideally twice a day. Massage should remain gentle and should not cause pain.

Applying too much pressure to a new scar could increase inflammation and encourage more scar tissue to form.

Keloid and hypertrophic scars

If your scar begins to increase in height or width, it is important to respond promptly.

Silicone sheets, silicone gel or compression products can help with keloid and hypertrophic scars. These products normally need to be used consistently for a prolonged period.

Personalised scar care

Every scar and recovery journey is different. A scar therapy appointment gives Lorena the opportunity to assess your scar, provide appropriate treatment and offer personalised self-care advice.
